The Man Booker longlist is out – though not all the books are yet – and the one I’m likely to demolish as soon as it’s published is Almost English, because it feels like familiar territory.
But the Man Booker International Prize was awarded a few weeks ago, to an author whose stories are shorter than short – five of them fit on this page. She is also a translator.
Lydia Davis has been knighted in France for her translations, particularly of Proust and Flaubert. “Translating is often rather like doing an elaborate word puzzle (and I have always liked those),” she on receiving her latest award.
